While cleaning out a closet, Father Edward Hays comes across items that bring back memories, and launches, first, into the tale of Mary and Tom, who auction their farm, but save one tiny box containing a lifetime of memories. As this pious, sentimental, simple narrative plays out, we're taught that material goods rust and age but memories grow in value. More complex and challenging is the story of the magic fishbowl, in which the goldfish enjoys the security of his little bowl, but his growth is naturally limited by the size of his surroundings. Hays elaborates by challenging us to expand our own horizons, even at the risk of personal comfort. These two stories each end on a provocative note that can serve as a vehicle for personal reflection and group discussion. Recommended for religious study groups; optional for others. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
