Aimed at students, this often powerful documentary chronicling the experiences of Irene Opdyke, a Polish Christian woman (now in her 70s), who risked her life saving 12 Jews during the Holocaust, is a professionally produced piece created by donated labor (including narration by Dateline host Stone Phillips). The program combines archival stills together with footage of Opdyke telling her moving story to a school audience: as a 19-year-old, she was able to hide Jewish refugees in a villa until she was caught by a major; although she paid a humiliating price for her heroism, the people were saved. One grateful interviewee, Frances Gruenberg, recalls that "Irene was a saint." One of the many unsung "Schindler's" who put humanity before self during that hellish time, Irene Opdyke's story is compellingly offered here, with a beautiful, affecting original soundtrack by Peter Griggs. Recommended. Aud: I, J, H. (R. Pitman)
