Books do indeed change lives--and hearts and minds also. In 1789, Olaudah Equiano published the first widely read slave autobiography, which helped fuel a growing anti-slavery movement in America and England. This video employs scholars and re-enactors to recount Equiano's eventful life. Equiano survived the miserable passage to America on a slave ship, eventually bought his freedom, and had a full career sailing on British naval ships, but the abolition of slavery was his lifelong passion. In spite of a very brief glimpse of female nudity, this video is recommended for high school libraries, as well as public and academic. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
