This straightforward, no-nonsense primer on birth control options for teens comes in two versions: “Version A” emphasizes that the decision to become sexually active should only be made in the context of marriage, and therefore abstinence should be considered the standard for teenagers. “Version B” does not make judgments regarding premarital sex, but still puts forth abstinence as a first choice, since it is the only 100% effective method of birth control and protection against STDs. In both versions, a doctor and several teens provide factual information about most other methods of birth control, including male and female condoms, sponges and foams, Norplant and the Pill, and even fertility awareness methods. Each type of contraceptive or protection is described, its usage and effectiveness explained, and viewers are informed about costs and potential problems or side effects. While the language used is very frank and thorough, all of the graphics are semi-cartoonish (though accurate), which may comfort the more squeamish. In addition, the program covers myths and ineffective methods, as well as offering a reminder that knowledge of birth control techniques is not an excuse to become sexually active. The accompanying curriculum is quite in-depth, with classroom activities, fact sheets, and statistics--focusing mostly on giving teens the skills needed to cope with pressures they may face to have sex, and the high risks involved both emotionally and physically. Neither preachy nor sugarcoated, this is recommended. Aud: J, H. (E. Gieschen)
