Surrounded by friends, Dom DeLuise (1933-2009) talks about his life in filmmaker Deren Abram's digitally shot low-budget documentary. DeLuise is certainly a gracious host, asking Dick Van Patten about his years as a child star, Jeffrey Ross about why he became a comedian, and Charles Durning about his marriage. Other pals include Burt Reynolds, Ruth Buzzi, Lloyd Battista (the dubbing voice of Marcello Mastroianni), and trumpeter Jack Sheldon, with whom he sings “Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone.” DeLuise says he knew he wanted to act from an early age but originally saw himself as a dramatic actor, moving from school plays in Brooklyn to professional productions in Manhattan. Oddly, he doesn't discuss his movies, although he does speak fondly about Anne Bancroft, who directed him in Fatso. Reynolds, his co-star in Smokey and the Bandit, declares, “He's the funniest man on the face of the earth, and I really mean that.” Family members also weigh in, including Dom's wife, Carol Arthur, and son David. With DeLuise listed as producer, the phrase “vanity project” certainly applies, but fans will appreciate the first-person perspective. DVD extras include a chat with actress Julie Hagerty about Airplane and a look at some of Reynolds' mementos. Optional. Aud: P. (K. Fennessy)
