Opera buffs are sure to enjoy this beautifully staged rendition of Cilea's four-act opera about opera. Mirella Freni is excellent in the demanding soprano title role of an 18th-century French actress, who becomes embroiled in a rivalry with the Princess of Bouillon for the love of the Count of Saxony. Unbeknownst to Adriana, however, the aging opera director for whom she works has harbored a secret love for her. The complications which arise from all of these love threads make for an entertaining two hours. Sung in Italian with English subtitles, the program also has the distinction of often providing split-screen subtitling during duets. Colorfully packaged, with pristine video, and a stereo Hi-Fi soundtrack, Adriana Lecouvreur, while not one of the more well-known operas, is a delight. Highly recommended.
