This sequel to the widely praised Before Stonewall chronicles the high and low points of the American gay and lesbian struggle since the raiding of New York's Stonewall Inn in 1969. Narrated by rock star Melissa Etheridge, it features well-chosen archival footage and interviews with articulate players, including Larry Kramer, Dorothy Allison, and Barney Frank. Trying to capture this history in under an hour-and-a-half's time is difficult, with milestones churning rapidly by (here's a womyn's music festival; there are the Continental Baths; there's Harvey Milk; oh, look, there's Anita Bryant; here comes the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, etc.), and a tendency to assume that viewers are already familiar with the events at hand. Feverish though it is, the tape does at least try to place all of the events in proper historical/societal context, does indeed include most of the really significant occurrences (although publication of Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On is not mentioned, the tape does include the recent murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming), and gives lots of time to AIDS, which, for better or worse, has widely been acknowledged as changing the face of the movement. Incredibly, we are not actually told what "Stonewall" was, but this tape is recommended for high school, public, and academic collections, especially those already owning Before Stonewall (also available with After Stonewall for the package price of $49.95).
