These two new entries in the flourishing nature music video genre boast the excellent cinematography of Camera One Productions (entries in their Whitewater series were reviewed in the last issue.) Alaska is a non-narrative pictorial overview of the Alaskan wilderness featuring panoramic vistas of snow-covered peaks and time-lapse photography capturing the beauty of the Northern Lights. The tape contains five separate pieces, with original music by Rusty Sabella. Wild Northwest, another non-narrative video, is without question one of the finest videos in the genre I've ever seen. Shot over a five-year period, Wild Northwest offers one stunning visual ballet after another, set to original music and accompanied by the sounds of nature: Orca whales cavorting in the misty water, a spotted owl swooping down on its prey in the forest--an act both violent and graceful, salmon spawning, and a breathtaking visual symphony which follows a huge flock of sandpipers as they perform intricate aerial maneuvers in tight formation. A glorious feast for the eyes and ears. Alaska is recommended; Wild Northwest is highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (Available from: Camera One Productions, P.O. Box 75556, Seattle, WA 98125.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
