There's a lot to see in the historic Mexican state of Oaxaca: dazzling churches, colorful town plazas, ancient ruins, and pristine beaches. Oaxaca, from the Alexandra's Travelogues series, includes visits to the city of Oaxaca, a pre-Columbian archeological site at Monte Alban, and the beaches of Puerto Escondito. Unfortunately, for the armchair traveler, the production doesn't show place names or maps onscreen, making orientation difficult. Host and Mexican native Alexandra Nunez speaks with a thick accent that may be difficult for some viewers to follow, though English subtitles (as well as Spanish and French narration options) are available among the DVD extras. However, the English translation is far from perfect (a typical example: “Respecting a non-written Mexican tradition, a French-style kiosk thrones in the center of the zocalo, right in front of the governor's house.”). Also, while the camerawork is generally good, there are a few dizzying pans reminiscent of my first efforts with a camcorder. Optional. [Note: Alexandra's Travelogues: Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa & Inland to Taxco is also available at the same price.] Aud: P. (R. Reagan)
