One of the stranger aspects of human evolution is that our ancestors coexisted with similar species who did not survive over the long haul. One such group might have been little people (no more than three-feet-tall) who lived on Flores, one of the Indonesian islands where life evolved along its own trajectory (as in the case of the famous dragons on neighboring Komodo), apart from the more uniform species development on the mainland. Some paleoanthropologists believe the fossil evidence suggests that this is a previously unknown hominid species—affectionately known by researchers as “Hobbits”—who lived concurrently with early humans. Other scientists dispute the claim, believing that the residents of Flores were modern humans, possibly a dwarf race, stricken by a growth deficiency. Presenting both points of view, this engaging NOVA episode tells a fascinating and somewhat eerie story featuring hints of intrigue (at one point, the Indonesian government seizes fossil remains and refutes the separate species theory). Combining excellent visuals with informative commentary from scientists and researchers, Alien From Earth is another characteristically fine scientific puzzler from the acclaimed NOVA series. DVD extras include printable materials for educators. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (T. Keogh)
