Anyone interested in lighthouses will be enthralled by this video which looks at the remote area of Canada known as Georgian Bay, a large section of Lake Huron, home to some of the most vicious storms in Canadian history. Here, a string of lighthouses have (usually) protected ships, crews, and passengers from foundering on the shallow reefs and rocks. The film offers detailed coverage of many of the lighthouses (seamlessly--and remarkably--blending old historic photographs with present day pictures), and includes some interviews with people who grew up in these isolated areas. Of course, with the closing of the lighthouses in the 1960s, most of them are rundown, but they are currently being 'adopted' by people who want to save this unique heritage. Although this video will certainly have more appeal to libraries in the Great Lakes area, it's suitable for general collections as well. Lynx Images has done an outstanding job in preserving on film a vanishing, but important, part of Great Lakes and Canadian history. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
