Introducing students to the importance of preserving the grasslands, one of America's most threatened biomes, the opening volume of this six-part series defines grasslands and illustrates how they serve as habitats for many forms of wildlife, while volumes 2-5 focus on different types of grasslands: tallgrass prairie, mixed prairie, shortgrass prairie and remnant grasslands. The final volume offers a cautionary examination of the devastation that began with the advent of settlers in the 1800s and reminds viewers of the need today to preserve and conserve the remaining grasslands. Although some footage is recycled from tape to tape (available individually for $59.95 each), the series features great photography and solid narration, and the short program lengths allow time for discussion and follow-up activities.
