Under the best of circumstances, the teen years can be an awkward time of testing, setting limits, and searching for one's identity: presumably, American Muslim teens have an even harder time fitting in and finding acceptance from skeptical, secular peers who don't share or understand their beliefs and rituals. This enlightening panel discussion features a group of multiracial, multicultural teens (boys and girls), including both the children of recent immigrants and young Americans whose parents have converted to Islam, who discuss Muslim-specific topics such as prayer, dietary restrictions, and unique dress (like the distinctive hijab, or head scarf), as well as more general subjects such as recreation, dating, getting along with peers, drinking, sex, and the universal problem of communicating with parents. In a sense, these kids are products of two worlds, proud to be Muslim, but still very American in their outlook, with the same hopes, doubts, and fears common to young people in the U.S. Surprisingly, there is very little mention of how the events of 9/11 have impacted young Muslim Americans, but while this might be considered a flaw, this upbeat and optimistic video could serve as an important first step in promoting understanding.
