American Pit Bull

In recent years, few animals have received such poor PR as the pit bull terrier (a Google search on “pit bull attacks” returns 1,850,000 links). During the early part of the 20th century, the pit bull terrier was viewed as a loyal and beloved companion (Helen Keller had one for a guide dog, and the celebrated Pete the Pup tagged along with the kiddie stars of the Our Gang/Little Rascals series). Today, however, pit bulls are seen as fearsome and violent, a dog that people would sooner associate with illegal fighting than as a playmate for frolicking children. That negative perception of the breed is the focus of American Pit Bull, a compelling documentary directed by Marilyn Braverman and produced by her Oscar-nominated husband Chuck Braverman. Pit bull terrier advocates weigh in here in full force, championing the gentle and intelligent side of the dog while celebrating its skills and positive strengths in competitions (the film also traces the breed's noble history as a working dog that enjoyed great popularity among farmers in the 19th and early 20th centuries). Although the pit bull's rep as a tireless protector is still prevalent, particularly within crime-heavy inner cities, this film goes to great lengths to underscore the fact that the breed is not inherently vicious: treated with kindness, the dog responds with affection.
