Your average American eats about 6 gallons of ice cream per year, and while I easily top that figure (qualifier: I eat non-fat yogurt ice cream), there's no question that being an American is more about Mom, the flag, and ice cream, than it is about "apple pie." (You don't see a Baskin & Robbins apple pie chain, do you?) Traveling across country to various legendary ice cream establishments and ice cream makers, this amiable hour is more bits than compelling whole, but the segments are pretty fun stuff. And for anyone considering a career change, put this in the hopper: Penn State University offers college-level instruction in making such popular ice cream favorites as "Death By Chocolate." A strong optional purchase. Aud: J, H, P. (R. Pitman)
