Stonehenge is clearly the most mysterious and perplexing phenomenon in England after, say, cricket, and while no one understands cricket, a few theories have been proposed about Stonehenge. Secrets of Stonehenge brings them to life using nifty computer graphics, scholarship and adequate location photography, but ultimately, even the best minds must admit that it's pretty hard to tell what people were thinking when they erected these Neolithic megaliths thousands of years ago. Were they meant as an astronomical observatory? A ceremonial site with unexplained "stations" for prayer similar to the Stations of the Cross in the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem? Were they a giant farm calendar meant to mark the seasons? Or a shamanistic trance center for ancestor worship? This video explores these in unbiased detail, but leaves out what is perfectly obvious to anyone who actually knows the British: Stonehenge is a giant wicket, left behind after a particularly "big" test match between Salisbury and Druidville which, like most matches, went on for just under 4,000 years. The balls, yet to be unearthed, will be covered in the next series, Mysteries of English Burial Mounds. Kidding aside, this engaging program is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Ray)
