How has the Star of David affected the Lone Star state? Although their numbers have always been small, Jewish immigrants--many of whom entered through the port city of Galveston, fanned out, and found a place in the oil, scrap, or retail furniture trades--have left an imposing legacy. Despite its location in the Bible belt, Jews have generally found prosperity and acceptance in Texas, and this program examines that process, describing the sometimes exotic cultural blends, particularly in the Hispanic regions along the border of Mexico. Descendents of Jewish settlers recall early struggles to establish communities and synagogues through the time tested tradition of mutual aid which helped families overcome isolation and geographic separation. According to those interviewed, anti-Semitism was not a major problem; rather, difficulties could often be attributed to ignorance of Jewish traditions. Today, as Texas becomes more urbanized, these middle-aged Jews are worried that their heritage is being lost through a combination of assimilation and indifference. Although At Home on the Range performs a valuable service in recalling an overlooked chapter in history, the video's appeal--despite its dedication and a welcome dash of humor--won't travel far beyond the state's borders. Recommended for college and public libraries in Texas; others might want to consider the more general Jewish America: The Making of the West (VL-3/98). Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
