Both kids and adults can enjoy Awesome Adventures' vicarious, fast, fun and funny journeys to the far corners of the world. Drawn from the popular TV series, the first of two episodes on Paradise and Polar Ice finds J. August Richards and two Pennsylvania seventh-graders snorkeling in Belize where vivid underwater photography showcases colorful fish and giant plants. On a trek through the rain forest, they encounter tarantulas, termite nests, drink from a vine that collects water during the rainy season, and swim in a "blue hole" (clear water made blue by the depth). In addition, the travelers/adventurers tube down a river into an eerie, dark cave system where ancient Mayan Indians performed bloodletting rituals, stand atop ruins to view Belize and neighboring countries Guatemala and Mexico, ride bikes across the countryside, and join in a local basketball game. In the second segment, A. T. Montgomery and two Icelandic teens climb a volcano, swing Tarzan-like on ropes off a cliff, ride horses descended from those originally imported by the Vikings, swim in a hot spring, boat across a "glacier lagoon," and ski on a rope attached to the back of a pickup truck. To paraphrase a car commercial, these are not your father's travel videos, and the young adventurers don't so much visit as experience the places on their itinerary. Recommended. Two other tapes in the series are also available at the same price: Jagged Peaks and Killer Canyons and Wild Water and Wild West. Aud: I, J, P. (J. McDaniel)
