Filmmaker Leslie Zemeckis (wife of director Robert Zemeckis) looks at the history of burlesque in this affectionate Showtime-aired documentary, which combines archival photos, film clips, and radio interviews, along with commentary from both performers and authors, who discuss key figures such as Lili St. Cyr, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Mademoiselle Fifi, the first striptease artist. Acrobat Renald von Muchow describes burlesque as a “a variety show with a little more spice to it,” while historian Nat Bodian adds, “It was essentially a dressed-up vaudeville show with bare bosoms” (Zemeckis showcases said anatomical features in a manner more matter-of-fact than salacious). Chris Costello (daughter of comedian Lou Costello) and Alan Alda (son of actor Robert Alda) talk about their fathers, whose supporting comedy acts were part of the productions. Some of the ladies themselves, including Tempest Storm and Blaze Starr, recount childhoods filled with poverty, abuse, and violence (Zemeckis captured Starr via audiotape). For those with good looks, talent, and confidence, the stage provided an escape, even if the life wasn't easy (hecklers, censorship battles, drug and alcohol addiction, and unstable costars are among the complaints expressed here). Talking about the mob owners of many clubs, the interviewees speak more positively than not, although they offer plenty of catty comments about their onstage colleagues. DVD extras include behind-the-scenes footage, extended interviews, a timeline, and a photo gallery. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (K. Fennessy)
