The deep psychic pain that women endure as a result of sexual abuse sometimes manifests itself in unusual ways. This fascinating black and white film explores the practice of scarification, or self-mutilation, in which the sufferers cut themselves as a way to cope with the hurt inside them. The women interviewed try to explain why they do it, detail the process, and share how they found the ability to stop. The filmmaker has gone beyond simple "q & a" sessions by adding snatches of words, and close-ups of statues, photos, knives and scars, all of which illuminate and counterpoint the bleak testimony of the subjects. A hypnotizing and ultimately touching film, this is suitable for academic libraries with larger psychological and/or women's studies collections. Aud: C. (E. Druda)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
