Concerned that the children and youth had no place to play--and unhappy with vandalism and teen-age crime rates--the local parent committee of the Christian Children's Fund in the Cherokee community of Cherry Tree, Oklahoma organized an independent community baseball field and gym. Fundraisers were held, land was donated, grants were secured, and public interest and participation soared. The children who helped adults with clearing the land and even some phases of construction inspired more adults to get involved, and as a result the community came together and developed a new feeling of pride. The ensuing remarkable drop in the Cherry Tree crime rate has been attributed to the recreation space, the cultural and social programs now being offered in the community center, and the involvement of the Youth Committee in planning these activities. "There's not bad kids, there's just bad attitudes," said one volunteer. Many other American communities could benefit from seeing what a committed group of parents and children can accomplish together. Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
