Hot on the heels/hooves/paws of Erin Derham's Stuffed comes another feature documentary on taxidermy asking viewers reconsider this outlier artistic medium. But Big Fur has an even wilder hook. Alberta, Canada, is home to Ken Walker, a world-class taxidermist with a secondary obsession, in the cryptozoological form of Bigfoot. A sasquatch believer, Walker claims to have samples of the legendary man-beast's dung. For an American taxidermy convention, he wants to unveil what an authentic stuffed Bigfoot might actually look like, (based on witness accounts and photos). Filmmaker Dan Wayne has a grand time with the premise, finding forbidden romance, Roy Orbison, and clever Corky Quackenbush stop-motion animation inserts (there's also a dandy visual shoutout to Alfred Hitchcock). Anti-hunting types may not be amused, and sasquatch skeptics may complain that material skips the history of taxidermied sideshow fakes (P.T. Barnum's notorious "Fiji mermaid") and more than one high-profile hoax in which a yeti costume on ice was passed off as a genuine creature corpse. Nonetheless, as a vastly entertaining view of a couple of oddball topics, Big Fur stands tall. Recommended. (Aud: C, P)
