Self-effacing Seattle guitarist Bill Frisell begins this concert by introducing the players in the band: Ron Miles (trumpet), Billy Drewes (alto saxophone), Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Greg Leisz (guitar), David Plitch (stand-up bass), and Matt Chamberlain (drums). Like their leader, all six have established reputations, particularly Fowlkes, veteran of the Lounge Lizards and the Jazz Passengers. Filmed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in July 2002, Frisell (who was on tour for 2001's Blues Dream at the time) performs dreamy, atmospheric work that incorporates elements of post-bop, experimental jazz, and even progressive rock. Of the 15 tracks, three are improvisations; the rest consist of originals and covers, including Hank Williams' “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Subtle pop and country influences crop up in other selections as well, such as “What Do We Do.” Although Frisell plays an electric guitar exclusively, Leisz alternates between lap steel guitar and mandolin. During the gig, most everyone gets the chance to show their chops. “Outlaws,” for instance, offers a particularly fine showcase for Fowlkes and Plitch, who add noir shadings to the soulful number. Presented in PCM stereo, this is recommended. Aud: P. (K. Fennessy)
