Intent on raising public awareness regarding the "diversity of life on earth and how it is being threatened by the current mass extinction of species," Biodiversity: Expressions of Life combines stock footage images with commentary that first defines "biodiversity" ("the variety of living things and the places they live"), and then elaborates on the threat of a "sixth wave of mass extinction," in which billions of years of evolutionary work are being lost thanks to human intervention in nature. One example offered is the introduction of the tamarisk tree, brought over to America from the Old World in the 1800s and planted as an ornamental tree. These trees have been overly successful in the Southwest, where they have crowded out native species and negatively impacted wildlife. Although it's not much more than a discussion starter for a classroom or community program on the topic, this inexpensive video should be considered a strong optional purchase. Aud: J, H, P. (L. Goldberg)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
