Marking the 62nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, America's first female military pilots--the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs)--of World War II were honored in 2003 in a ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery. Filmmaker Alice Carron's Blue Horizon celebrates these brave, pioneering women in a patriotic tribute that includes a few original songs and vintage 1940s footage, but is primarily comprised of stories told by the women themselves. From childhood dreams of flying to the thrill of aviation training to the many friendships created during this eventful period in their lives, former WASPs talk enthusiastically about their individual and collective experiences. While not as penetrating as Free a Man to Fight: Women Soldiers of World War II (VL-5/01)--particularly with regard to the post-war environment these women faced when servicemen returned to take their jobs--Blue Horizon nevertheless is another fitting “greatest-generation”-style tribute that is recommended, overall, for larger collections.
