Watching the septuagenarians grooving to Bobby Vinton's PBS hour-plus pledge concert filmed at his Blue Velvet Theater in Branson, MO, I found myself feeling thankful that I won't be writing music DVD reviews 50 years from now (imagine the Marilyn Manson reunion tour: seventysomething babes will be climbing onto the arthritic shoulders of their hunched hubbies and flashing their withered breasts at the snarling Manson as he stalks the stage with the aid of a walker). Here, the ladies merely bring roses to the legendary '60s crooner who regales the audience with a string of hits, including "Blue on Blue," "Sealed With a Kiss," "I Love How You Love Me" (all performed in a medley), "Roses Are Red (My Love)," "Mr. Lonely," "Blue Velvet," "There, I've Said It Again," and "Crying," among others, as well as medleys devoted to big band, polka, old 45s, Al Jolson (misspelled "Jolsen" on the box) and Chopin (the first Polish prince; Vinton is the second). Vinton, who's joined on stage at various points by a troupe of dancing girls, his mother, his son, and his daughters, is not exactly the most scintillating of hosts, but his velvety voice will still send shivers up fans' spines. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 or stereo, this is sure to be popular, and is recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
