Buzz in a Bottle: The Dangers of Caffeine-Spiked Energy Drinks

The booming energy-drink industry is a $10 billion behemoth, with a third of its consumers under the age of 18. Unfortunately, the amount of caffeine in these beverages can be dangerous—especially to young people—so the message of this cautionary program is that just because it's legal doesn't mean it's safe. Interviews with doctors and a nutritionist are combined here with an overview of energy drinks and their long lists of ingredients, along with the effects of excessive consumption, which can include dizziness, fainting, caffeine poisoning, and diminished concentration, among others. Three real-life stories, told through dramatic re-enactments and conversations with the people affected, are used to illustrate the dangers of the overuse of energy drinks (and graver health problems when mixed with alcohol). While the power of deceptive marketing receives greater attention in the accompanying curriculum, the topic is unfortunately only mentioned in the program itself (viewers might have benefited from more time spent on how to look at these marketing strategies with a critical eye, rather than on a relatively rare case of caffeine overdose or the obvious “don't drink and drive” story). Still, Buzz in a Bottle does offer a solid introduction to an important health issue and will be a good discussion-starter to help young people consider making better choices. Recommended.
