Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Hispanic tradition celebrated on November 1st in which families and friends remember lost loved ones in a very tangible way. This video documents the altares (altars) that are built in honor of the deceased. Calaveras (sculptures of skulls) and other items that are connected with the departed are placed upon them--anything from shoes to favorite fast food. An emotional interview with mothers of sons killed in drive-bys shows how creating such monuments helps them work through their raw pain. Other interviews remind us that the tradition needs to be understood not as a cultural fad, but as a solemn remembrance. Although it covers an important tradition, the video lacks focus and coherency at times. Prior knowledge of Dia de los Muertos is assumed, as there is often no background explanation given to accompany visuals or terms used. The production quality is somewhat home video-like, with very dark or poorly lit scenes, odd framing, and inconsistent audio. A very optional purchase. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)
