Trying to capture the essence of California in an hour-long video is near impossible, but the producers of this video have come mighty close. Along with the touristy shots of scenery (which remains remarkably untouched despite the incredible increases in population), there are also surprisingly insightful and candid descriptions of how some notable California residents' roads to success have been paved with the sacrifices of others. Taking viewers to all corners of the state, including the Gold Rush towns, the California Missions, Yosemite, John Muir's Redwoods, the Wine Country, Hollywood, San Francisco, Hearst Castle, and more, the producers present a "warts and all" look at California that doesn't tarnish the Golden State, but gives viewers a chance to thoughtfully evaluate what is myth and what is real. A welcome addition to most public library collections. Also available: Mexico: A Tribute. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
