No one, I think, would confuse Casey Kasem's glib between-song sociopolitical “insights” into the American 1960s with the intelligent assessments of, say, a Bill Moyers, but the man knows music, and the five-disc boxed set Casey Kasem's Rock & Roll Goldmine serves up a whole jukebox worth of bands performing live (or lip-synching) some of the greatest rock, soul, and pop hits from the era. Divided into four music-laden discs--and a fifth DVD, Elvis…The Echo Will Never Die, celebrating the life and career of Elvis Presley--the 7-12 selection music DVDs are divided into The Sixties, The Soul Years, The British Invasion, and The San Francisco Sound. Granted, there are some clunkers (such as Peter and Gordon mouthing their way through “World Without Love”), but for the most part, the hits just keep on comin': Big Brother & the Holding Company and Janis Joplin's “Ball and Chain,” James Brown's “I Feel Good,” Jefferson Airplane's “White Rabbit,” Joe Cocker's “Delta Lady,” Van Morrison's “Domino,” Aretha Franklin's “Respect,” The Doors' “People Are Strange,” and--a personal favorite--The Small Faces' “Itchycoo Park,” among many, many others. Presented in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, this collection is a refreshing blast from the nostalgic past that will have baby boomers reaching for their love beads and bong--er, incense.
