Guess what CEO and founder Jeff Bezos' favorite suggested alternative name is for Amazon.com, the mother (and father) of all online retail stores? Amazon.org, since it's a non-profit organization (audience laughter and applause). In this episode of PBS's CEO Exchange, hosted by journalist Jeff Greenfield, the 36-year-old wunderkind chats with Lands' End CEO David Dyer in front of a bevy of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed business students from The Wharton School. Viewers will enjoy early anecdotes about these titans of capitalism (armed with a screwdriver, Bezos purportedly tried to convert his crib into a bed at the age of 3; Dyer, whose parents were in retail, remembers being attracted to the sound of cash registers as a kid). As for the meat of the program--the subject of internet shopping in the 21st century--anyone expecting these two possible future competitors to reveal much in the way of insider business strategies will be sorely disappointed. Bezos delivers his standard mantra on "customer obsession," while Dyer sings the praises of his "family" of staff. Both are very bullish on the future of internet sales: Bezos has the unique position of having one-third of all online buyers purchase from his company, while Dyer has seen Lands' End's online business grow to 10% of sales (in 1995, by contrast, total annual online sales came to $160). While budding entrepreneurs are unlikely to come away with much in the way of specific tips and tactics for growing their businesses online, they're certain to be inspired; and general audiences--including individual investors--will enjoy this conversation with the rich (on paper) and dot.com famous. Recommended. Other titles in the CEO Exchange series include: Cutting Edge Technology, Challenges of the 21st Century CEO and Creating the 21st Century CEO. Aud: C, P. (R. Pitman)
