Hard-rock supergroup Chickenfoot takes the stage during three 2009 appearances—a complete show at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix, plus segments from the Tabernacle in Atlanta and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland—in this DVD directed by Chris Lovett and shot in high definition with 16 cameras. The 13 tracks feature a fair amount of soloing, especially from songwriter/guitarist Joe Satriani. The other famed players are singer/co-songwriter Sammy Hagar (Van Halen and Montrose), bassist Michael Anthony (Van Halen), and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Known as the Red Rocker, Hagar looks more grunge-like in his plaid shirt and jeans, while Smith's Bad Company T-shirt is more indicative of the band's meat-and-potatoes rock style, which eschews synthesizers and other forms of embellishment—unless you count Satriani's teeth-picking on “Down the Drain.” An original blues-rock number, “Bitten by the Wolf,” starts out acoustic and ends up electric, and the gig concludes with jams and covers, including the Who's “My Generation” and the guitar showcase “Future in the Past” (Hagar). Although not credited, “The Star-Spangled Banner” (Satriani) and a version of Led Zeppelin's “Immigrant Song” are also part of the mix. Extras include interviews with the band, backstage footage, a featurette with appearances from the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir and Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and a photo gallery. Presented in DTS 5.1 (DTS-HD 5.1 on the Blu-ray version), Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, this is recommended for aficionados of hard rock. Aud: P. (K. Fennessy)
