Actor-evangelist Kirk Cameron goes on a crusade to save families whose children are being shaped by the solipsism of social media rather than God’s authority in filmmaker Caleb Price’s documentary Connect. Cameron admits that he and his wife gave smartphones to each of their six kids, but then immediately suffered buyer’s remorse. Concerned about the consequences of digital media on young lives, Cameron sets out to talk with various experts—primarily pastors and a Christian psychologist—about the dangers (bullying, porn, pedophiles) and psychological impacts (on young developing brains) of unfettered digital access for children. While the pitfalls of social media outlined here are certainly valid—as is the argument that connecting in the real world is vital for kids—this will mostly appeal to Christian families due to its faith-based angle and numerous biblical passages. But many Christians will also find some of this to be a) obvious, and b) silly (particularly a scene in which Cameron imagines himself tracking down and fighting the Devil). A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
