"We're all part of a great human family," says award-winning photographer-author-adventurer Jan Reynolds in this excellent video odyssey that takes viewers on a gorgeously filmed trek through the Himalayas, starting in the village of Namche Bazar, on the Nepalese side, and ending in Tingri, on the Tibetan side. Walking an ancient salt trading route through the mountains, sometimes traveling alone, and sometimes with yaks and local companions, Reynolds offers articulate commentary on local customs, religious ceremonies, the environmental impact of tourism, and the current state of affairs in the Chinese-controlled Tibet, backed by plenty of maps and relevant vocabulary (Reynolds often refers back to Western culture as well to give context to foreign concepts). Offering an always respectful treatment of the land and people that--together with the accompanying curriculum--incorporates current middle school geography standards, this very affordable program is highly recommended. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
