70s superstar Curtis Mayfield performs some of his best-known hits in this live concert video shot in a famous English nightclub in 1988. Selections include: "Little Child Running Wild," "People Get Ready," "Pusherman," "We Gotta Have Peace," "Move On Up," and Mayfield's megahit from the film Superfly: "Freddie's Dead." In between songs, the program goes backstage for an interview with Mayfield conducted by the uncredited-as-interviewer Paul Weller (former lead singer of The Jam and last seen as the front man for Style Council). Weller, who keeps trying to get Mayfield to admit that serious political and social activism is at the root of his music, doesn't fare well. Mayfield prefers to credit his spirituality. Still, the music is very nice, and the crowd at Ronnie Scott's is definitely into it. Recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
