One of the women in this interesting look at the lives of modern Lapplanders says: "Lapps who work 8 to 5 are Swedes." The remark sums up the difference between the Lapps and their Northern Scandinavian cousins. Interviews with a number of Lapp women focus on the lifestyle and problems of Lapplanders--from their all-encompassing reliance on the reindeer as the basis for their subsistence to the threat of lost lands through the encroaching timber trade. Viewers see the day to day lives of women who are often alone, while their spouses are out tracking a reindeer herd, as well as a nicely photographed roundup of reindeer during which the men and women work side by side. An interesting documentary, with a beautiful soundtrack, and good subtitling. Recommended. (Available from: Chip Taylor Communications, 15 Spollett Drive, Derry, NH 03038; 1-800-876-CHIP.)
