An unrepentant good ol' boy, veteran songwriter David Allan Coe (“Take This Job and Shove It”) kicks off a 20-song concert with his atypically tender ballad “Heaven Only Knows” before really cutting loose. Taped at Coe's most recent annual performance at Billy Bob's Texas, the renowned honky-tonk in Ft. Worth, the scorching set includes country and blues numbers made famous by Johnny Paycheck, Waylon Jennings, and others. With his heavily tattooed arms, long and stringy hair tied back in a ponytail, and craggily weathered face, Coe leaves little doubt that he's lived songs such as “Drank My Wife Away,” “Wreckless” and “Time Off for Bad Behavior.” He's as hard-drinkin' and tough cussin' as they come, as his odes to booze (“I've been renewing my friendship with Jim Beam”) and not-infrequent use of f-word variations attest. While his self-mythologizing may be a turnoff to non-fans, Coe earns grudging respect for being the real redneck deal. He's no rhinestone cowboy, and this warts-and-all show, presented in DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 proves it. DVD extras include behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, and interviews with Coe, Kid Rock, Pantera, and Uncle Cracker. Recommended. Aud: P. (T. Rich)
