In this addition to the Music in High Places series, the hard rock alt-band Deftones explore the lush scenic beauty of Hawaii while serving up acoustic and electric versions (sometimes cutting back and forth within the same song) of tunes such as "Headup," "One Weak," "The Boy's Republic," and "Digital Bath" on this Dolby Digital 5.1 recorded disc. However, whether performing electric in front of a small audience or acoustic on craggy rocks, the group's harmony seems a bit ragged, regardless of whether the boys are plugged or unplugged, and lead vocalist Chino Moreno's mournful voice often strays off-key. Visiting locations such as the Puhimau Steam Vents, Kilauea Overlook and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, the universally well-spoken band members appear to be having a great time (especially when playing in crashing waves or watching lava flow). Still, even a tolerable rendition of the popular "Change (In the House of Flies)" can't push this program beyond merely so-so. Deftones: Live in Hawaii might be appreciated by hardcore fans, but this is simply not the best of the Deftones. Optional. [Note: DVD extras include behind-the-scenes and "Getting There" featurettes, interviews with the band, and a text biography.] Aud: P. (J. Williams)
