Winner of the Director's Choice Award at the Black Maria Film & Video Festival and the Best Documentary Award at the Rural Route Film Festival, filmmakers Ellen Brodsky and Dunya Alwan's Dental Farmer is a charming profile of Brodsky's father-in-law: 77-year-old Dr. Art Rybeck, a West Virginia organic farmer/beekeeper/dentist who has set up a pay-as-you-can/barter dental clinic in his farmhouse to treat members of the rural community who have no medical and/or dental insurance. Combining interviews with Rybeck, his co-workers, and patients, together with footage of the “dental farmer” cultivating produce and curing toothaches, this brief piece offers an inspirational look at a very down-to-earth man engaged in saintly work. Also included on the tape is the three-minute short “When Ellen Met Art,” in which the filmmaker relates how she was pressed into emergency service as a novice dental assistant on the night she met her prospective father-in-law. Recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
