During the emotionally fraught teen years, it's normal for adolescents to experience “bad days” or feel sad or down on occasion. But what if the feeling lasts and doesn't go away? Depression is a major problem for many teens, one that often goes undiagnosed and untreated, leading to failure in school, self-mutilation, and even suicide. Because peers—whether siblings or friends—are often the first to notice something wrong (and may be someone a depressed teen will confide in), it's crucial for young people to know what their options are to provide help. Depression: What YOU Can Do!, an entry in the long-running PBS series In the Mix, combines the personal stories of teens together with expert advice from a school counselor and a child psychiatrist regarding identifying and acting on potentially destructive depression in others. A list of dos (do encourage, do listen) and don'ts (don't gossip, don't avoid the person) for dealing with a depressed peer are presented, along with a reminder of the importance of informing trusted adults (regardless of any promise made not to tell). The program ends on a hopeful note, pointing out that many who have struggled with major depression and even attempted suicide do, in fact, recover with therapy and support from family and friends (especially those who intervened early on).
