Diamonds in the Rough

For anyone who doesn't understand why sports can be so important to young people, Diamonds in the Rough offers the inspiring story of Coach Steve Mandl and his high school baseball team. Living in the middle of the "crack capital" of the world, the Washington Heights area of New York City, a neighborhood largely populated by immigrants from the Dominican Republic (a country that has contributed a number of Major League players), the Dominican kids on the baseball team are held together by their respect for each other and their love of the game. Coach Mandl uses his sport to teach larger lessons, giving his players a sense of pride and direction that keeps them out of trouble, while keeping their eyes on the larger prize--education. Mandl gets most of his players into college, which not only furthers their academic careers but also keeps them playing ball. Highly recommended, even at the stiff price of $195. Editor's Choice.
