Dinosaurs Vs. Apes compiles two nostalgic documentaries from filmmaker, novelist, and pop-culture historian Donald Glut, a lifelong monster-movie aficionado whose amateur efforts (shot in 8mm and 16mm) earned him early recognition in such august publications as Famous Monsters of Filmland. The films—Dinosaur Movies (1993) and Hollywood Goes Ape! (1994)—profile their respective subjects through rare film clips and interviews with such fantastic-film notables as Ray Harryhausen, Jim Danforth, Forrest J. Ackerman, and George E. Turner. Glut's fondness for the material is evident in every frame, and he does a wonderful job of putting such beloved classics as King Kong and The Lost World in their proper historical perspective. Although both documentaries were clearly made inexpensively, their considerable entertainment value belies their low budgets. DVD extras include a featurette on paleontologist Dr. Edwin H. Colbert.
