This NOVA special follows seven Harvard Medical School graduates (four men, three women) over 21 years: from their first day of medical school, through their internships and residencies, and on to launching careers in their respective specialties of research, clinical practice, and community care. Directed by Michael Barnes, Doctors' Diaries shadows the young medics as they deal with patients and mentors, experiencing the highs and lows of medicine—whether delivering a baby or losing someone in their care. At the hospital or at home, the seven discuss their shifting goals within the field, the perplexing (and timely) question of who pays for healthcare, and the emotional toll their demanding schedules can take on relationships and marriage (by the close of the documentary, one of the subjects has been married four times). In the end, most have found their niche in medicine, seem happy with their choice, and—despite having lost some youthful idealism—retain their commitment to the profession. Although not as exciting as TV's medical dramas, Doctors' Diaries will reward thoughtful viewers with its balanced but provocative behind-the-scenes look at the molding of young American doctors. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
