Not so long ago, an HIV diagnosis was a death sentence, ultimately leading to the full-blown killer disease AIDS. Today, however, thanks to medical advances (including much-hyped protease inhibitor "drug cocktails"), there's a growing misconception that those who contract HIV/AIDS can simply pop a few pills and be fine. This no-holds-barred video completely debunks this dangerous myth, reminding viewers of the disturbing truth: regardless of the lesser coverage in the media, people do still die of AIDS, and not just in medically less advanced Africa--tens of thousands of hospice beds in America are filled, and none stay empty for long. Mainly geared towards promoting awareness and prevention amongst teens (though it could be a serious wakeup for sexually active adults as well), filmmaker Louise Hogarth's Does Anyone Die of AIDS Anymore? features healthcare professionals who discuss the horrifying side effects of the staggering amount of drugs necessary to simply keep HIV under a semblance of control. Given the plethora of websites promoting unprotected sex, and the fact that many members of the gay community believe that the AIDS epidemic is over, this well-edited, articulate look at the "third wave" of HIV infection is timely and widely applicable (though it would have been nice to see more input from the heterosexual community on the issues presented here). Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)
