Visionary science fiction novelist Jules Verne once said, "Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real." Narrated by Jean-Jules Verne (the writer's great grandson) and produced by James Cameron (Titanic), this documentary aims to be an inspiring tribute to the human spirit of exploration. The first section focuses on director Cameron, who describes how as a young, landlocked Canadian he developed an early fascination with the unexplored depths of the ocean world. Viewers will see clips from Cameron's The Abyss and Titanic, as well as from some of his documentaries capturing deep sea life. But while the clips include rare glimpses of exotic undersea creatures and terrain, the result here inevitably seems self-serving on Cameron's part. The video's second half offers a tribute to astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was a member of the three-man team for the Apollo space program's first moon landing in 1969. Aldrin talks about the spirit of adventure that inspired the lunar landings, and the life-changing effects of his trip to the moon. Unfortunately, because the two halves of the program are somewhat unrelated, the overall film suffers from a lack of focus. Most would be better off purchasing Cameron's solid documentaries together with one or more of the many fine documentaries and series available covering the Apollo space program. Not a necessary purchase. Aud: H, P. (S. Rees)
