This latest addition to the Families of the World series takes young viewers to England, where they spend a few days with two elementary-school-aged children: James, 10, who lives in Bath and begins his day with a ride to school on his bicycle, and Jessica, 9, who lives on a farm in western England and begins her day a bit earlier, milking the cows. Each segment is narrated in first-person as a typical day for James and Jessica unfolds: interacting with friends, eating meals with their families, and participating in extracurricular activities such as swimming or music lessons. Interspersed throughout the narration are facts touching on the country's history, government, and culture. Although occasionally slow-paced, with some low-lit shots, this is still a solid addition to a fine, award-winning series that helps introduce youngsters to global cultures (see reviews of Families of India [VL-1/97], Families of Japan [VL-7/99] and Families of Sweden [VL-1/99]). Recommended. Also newly available at the same price: Families of Russia. Aud: E, I, P. (E. Gieschen)
