Farther Than the Eye Can See, featuring high-definition footage shot at the top of Mt. Everest, presents the stirring story of Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind climber to summit the legendary peak. Sponsored by the National Federation for the Blind (with many contributions from others, including the Outdoor Life Network and Outside magazine), the real story here lies in the small triumphs—courtesy of the camaraderie, teamwork, and coordination required to make even the simplest steps possible. Watching Weihenmayer cross an ice crevasse on an aluminum ladder seems worlds away from his practice runs back home in Golden, CO. Some people assume that not being able to see how far you can fall would make you less afraid, but to Erik the possibility of falling into the unknown carried an even more intense fear. The National Federation for the Blind's aim here was to help demystify blindness, while also illustrating how the sight-impaired can engage in a wide range of activities (including some beyond the abilities of most of us who can see)—and the result is this amazing testament to the human spirit that has already picked up 17 international film festival awards.
