This entry in the PBS-aired series In the Mix is an abridged version of a longer documentary about 10 diverse New York City high school students who participated in communication coach Gail Noppe-Brandon's unique 10-week after-school workshop, which uses theatre to teach public and interpersonal communication skills, guiding students through the playwriting, acting, and performance processes in order to develop self-awareness and confidence. Noppe-Brandon isn't afraid to give pointed critical help, but it's apparent that she believes in the potential of all her participants (some kids are already articulate and outgoing; others hold back due to personality or language barriers—for several, English is obviously a second language), who continue to grow as they learn monologues, write their own plays, and rehearse with one another within a nurturing environment. Without a detailed curriculum, this is essentially an inspirational piece, but it should prove to be a rewarding watch for both students and general audiences. Recommended. Aud: H, P. (E. Gieschen)
