There are several reasons to like the style of Footloose in Palau: the narration is sparse, wry, and delivered in a gentle Scottish accent by host Ian Sutherland; hotel promotions are largely absent; and there are no MTV-like montages or special effects--just a guy telling you why the Palua Islands are interesting. In truth, there aren't a lot of competing programs on these obscure Micronesian islands which lie 1,300 km southwest of Guam and 880 km east of the Philippines. (If you've never seen the Palau Islands before, think of them as tiny, umbrella shaped limestone and fossilized coral outcroppings, topped with lush vegetation and floating on an aquamarine lagoon in the Western Pacific Ocean.) 13,000 people live on nine islands in a matriarchal society (shockingly, an equal number of Japanese and Americans were killed in a senseless fight over these same islands during WWII). Outlying areas are littered with the ruins of battles, the prisoners in the jail make amazing woodcarvings, a nearby lake is literally filled to overflowing with harmless giant jellyfish, and the undersea diving experiences are simply amazing. If that's not reason enough to visit, the joyous, topless dancing ceremonies honoring the birth of a woman's first child sure beat any baby shower I've attended. The copyright at the end of this tape indicates a production date of 1996, but the information presented about this timeless destination has probably dated little since then. Recommended for larger travel collections. Aud: P. (R. Ray)
