“For every person who has something negative to say about foster care, what have you done?” asks a long-time foster mother, responding to those naysayers who decry what they perceive as a perks-for-caregivers "welfare system." A candid presentation, featuring remarks from teenagers, foster parents, educators and policy experts, Foster Kids, Our Kids addresses concerns related to teens in foster care, particularly the question of "aging out," which happens when a child turns 18 and is no longer eligible for benefits. While generally positive about the fostering experience, the video also stresses the realities: most of these children--nearly 600,000 in the U.S. today; more than twice the number from 20 years ago--come with some sort of emotional and/or behavioral baggage, and their birthparents are expected to maintain contact with them, which can be difficult for everyone. An eye-opening look at a burgeoning social issue, this evenhanded examination of the current state of foster care is highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
